The Fall Guy

I thought the most unbelievable part was Jason Momoa starring in a blockbuster franchise. Sorry Aquadude...

★★★

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his character work. He's just one of those dudes that's too pretty for me to really get invested in, like Shy Guy Ry here. I honestly wanted to rate this lower out of sheer aesthetic rage, but I'm a bigger person than that, plus this movie had a few things going for it:

  • It's about the unsung heros, awww
  • The stunts in the movie are genuinely impressive on their own, but also
  • The stunts actually drive the plot forward at points, you can tell the director is a stuntman (ok I cheated he said it at the beginning of the movie in a somewhat cringe PSA before the movie with the baby gander)
  • The script was pretty funny in that 'punched up' kind of way where I said 'heh' but didn't actually belly laugh
  • Booooooooom
  • I didn't hate their relationship, not that there was like a ton to unpack there.

Although I'd argue at the point that they're planning on going to the beach and bringing spicy margs and making bad decisions, you can't really say they're bad decisions, right? Like those are sober plans, my dudes. And on to nits to pick: like I get this was always going to be a navel-gazing, circle-jerk of a fourth-wall-breaking project, but at the point Ryan and stunt director's main form of bonding is quoting movies at each other, I'm like: yeah, I get it. You're in the movies, you like the movies. Movie movie movie. I don't even know if there were third act problems or if that was just a rouse. I feel like the only third act problem was trying to figure out how to get more effects and stunts into it.
